What did you like best about this book?

Building Character with Sam, Izzy, & Many Other Dogs is a “How to Win Friends and Influence People” study course for children (of sorts). It’s written very well and the book is filled with colorful pictures of dogs, colorful fonts and quick, thought-providing points. The author has created a very unique concept here - I can’t think of any books exactly like this one the market – and provided he’s got a platform for prompting it, self-publishing may sure be the way to go for this one. It’s hard to explain exactly what I liked with this one – it’s one of those books you’ve really got to hold and spend some time with to appreciate it. If the author can get it into reader’s hands, he’s likely got a winner here.

How can the author improve this book?

The challenge with a title like this one is to have e platform from which to promote it. If parents can get their hands on this title, especially within the right setting, they’ll likely want it for their kids. The author seems to have the credentials for prompting it, and is thinking ahead about what will give additional value to the book (i.e. a free coloring book, audio CD, etc). But marketing is only one of great downfalls of self-publishers. This author may already be on the way in the right direction, but he should be encouraged to study how other self-publishers market their books and get – at the very least – samples out to their communities. This book won’t sell itself from backline alone – but the full experience of what’s inside could make all the difference.

I love Kurt Vonnegut. He is the author of over 100 books.

I share something in common with Kurt Vonnegut. We both went to Indiana Univesrity. I was reading an article about Kurt and his books in a previous issue of a magazine that was sent to recent Indiana University graduates. I have also read a recent story that Kurt Vonnegut had recently passed away.

This is a fun little picture book.

Hilary Pfeifer is a very creative person!

Hilary creates these really neat craft pachyderms [the scientific name for elephant] by hand.

Her book Elephabet consists of 26 portmanteus [new word made from two words].

Here is an example:

Neapoliphant [Neapolitian + elephant] which is Neapolitan ice cream (combination of the flavors vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry). Yum!

Fun little book. I highly suggest it.

Is it a Wonderful Life?

I watched my favorite movie, "It's a wonderful life" with my mother, father, and sister last weekend. I love that movie.

Today, I read an article that the character "Zuzu" didn't have such a wonderful life.

The recent documentary film, Freakonomics had a section that claimed “It’s not a wonderful life” that included clips from the classic movie, “It’s a wonderful life.”
They argue that legalized abortion in the 70s was the reason crime rate dropped in the 90s because unwanted children didn’t grow up to become criminals. The children who were aborted in the 70s and 80s would have been at the age to get involved in crimes in the 90s.
I’m not sure if I totally agree with their research. I do know that I want to be more like a George Baily.

Greg Luzniak'a Three Goats Gruff.

Greg Luzniak recently raised funds to self-publish his first children’s picture book, Three Goats Gruff, using kickstarter.com.

I’m proud to say that I was a backer for this project. I was rewarded with a limited edition copy from the first printing (copy # 373 out of 1,000).

Three Goats Gruff is a story that I remember from my own childhood (during the mid-80s). I've always enjoyed this book.

I think Greg Luzniak is an amazing artist. I love his art in this book. I think he has done a great job at brining this classic book back to life for today's generation of kids!

Greg Luzniak studied at the Joe Kubert School of Cartooning and the Art Institute of Houston. He has illustrated comics for Marvel, DC, and Malibu Comics. He has also worked in creating art for video games.
I think his artwork is inspiring.

I had the opportunity to read Cosmic and Universal Laws: Infinite Laws for a Happy and Prosperous Life by Margo Kirtikar Ph.D. This is one of my favorite books on philosophy and metaphysics.

Margo Kirtikar’s book has been on the bestseller list on amazon in philosophy.

You would need to research and study hundreds of books. We can look at these laws as keys that open the mysteries of life itself. I had the opportunity to read Sharón Lynn Wyeth’s (2010) book:

I must say that this is a very interesting book.

Sharón Lynn Wyeth is an expert on Neimology. This is a of the placement of the letters in a name and how they interact with each other to reveal hidden secrets about one's character.

Sharón Lynn Wyeth asks: What does your name say about you?

She’ll help you discover personality secrets in your own name. I think it is fun to decode the names of my family and friends too!

I do strongly believe that our names serve as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Imagine have Jones for a last name. You’ve probably heard the saying, “keeping up with the Jones.” These are people who set the benchmark for high status. You’ve probably also heard the old saying, “your name is Mud.” This goes back to Dr. Samuel Mudd who had admitted to looking at John Wilkes Booth’s injured leg. Here is a history lesson that you probably already know: Booth shot Lincoln.

Names can also have several stereotypes: What stereotypes do you think of when you hear these names: Pocahontas, Jamel, Adolph, Juan, Gertrude, John.?
and second meanings.

Can you Jimmy that? (Fix it.)
Are you Joshing me? (Joking).
No way Jose (not going to happen).
You don’t know Jack. (You’re not smart) or worse, You’re a Jack… Well. Nevermind.

My brother and I would often tell my sister, “You carry it, your name is Carrie.”
Okay, back to decoding letters or our names.

I did a test sample of my first name according to read Sharón Lynn Wyeth’s book:

My actual name is Danny. A common misconception is that my real name is Daniel. I’ve got into arguments over it when people say, “Your name is Daniel. That is what is on your birth certificate.” I reply back that I know what name is on my birth certificate. (laugh aloud). How would they know if they’ve never seen it? And yes, it is “Danny.”

D-A-NN-Y

D (first constant) means I’m “delightful, divine, needs clutter for imagination.” I do have several junk drawers.

A (First vowel) means I “desire honesty, truth, justice, wisdom. I’m self-reliant and self-sacrificing. Hard-working.

NN (double constant in middle of my name) means that I could be a work-aholic and have a good memory.

Y (names that end in this letter) could mean having a desperate need to be liked and are easy to get along with.

You can do this on middle and last names too!

The Mind.

Dear friend,

I had the opportunity to read The Mind’s Use-Fullness Depends on the Thoughts of The User by Allan Rufus.

This is a very powerful little book on self-discovery, self-healing, motivation, and realization.

Rufus challenges the reader to change her (or his) thoughts in order to change life.
Rufus quotes the Ascended Master Kuthumi:

“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got”.

Rufus argues that only through our awareness can we change something.

This book is about a powerful philosophy. It is on Inner-Alchemy and Self-Transformation.

The book gives simply and easy-to-understand metaphors to help the reader get in touch with the meaning of her (or his) own life, to set goals, and to live a life worth living.

I’d imagine a Life Coach would recommend a person to read this book.

You’d probably enjoy this book if you like anything by: Rhonda Bryne, Napoleon Hill, Bob Proctor, Joe Vitale, Robert Collier, Marci Shimoff, Jack Canfield, Deepak Chopra, and others like them.

How Many Hours Does It Take to Become Great at Something?

Today, I watched a video on CNN about a young man, Dan McLaughlin who is trying to become great at playing golf. He is working to complete 10,000 hours of active practice in the sport. Crazy Dream.

What do you do when you have a crazy dream?

Well, I blog about it.

I had a strange dream that was a version of the 80s movie weekend at Bernies.

For some reason it was called, “Weekend at Birdies” in my dream and it was about Senator Robert Byrd.

I remember the spelling was Birdies and not "Byrd" for some reason.

In the dream, The senator had passed away like in real life.
My grandmother knew Robert Byrd because they lived in the same area (in real life), so this may have influenced my dream.

In my dream the government was attempting to pass some type of big legislation. This dream goverment was made up of past Presidents: Reagan, Carter, Nixon, Bill Clinton. And Hillary was there too and a few other people, Senator Ted Kennedy, and LBJ, but not JFK. Robert Kennedy may have been in this crazy group. These were people just wearining masks that looked like presidents and politicians. And several of them were smoking around a big table with Byrd at the end of it talking. He didn't have a mask on. but I felt like it wasn't real either.

Part of the maks reminded me of that 90s movie where the surfers put on President masks and rob banks with Keanu Reeves and that other guy (from Ghost) who passed away. I can't remember the name of that movie.

My dream focused on some big type of goverment deal or legislation. It was something big and controversial like the budget or something. I’m not sure.

People didn’t think it was going to pass. People felt the need that it must pass. Some people were super mad about it. Why would I dream about such conflict? I think it had something to do with Bank of America adding a $5 a month fee to their debit cards too.

And there was a preview on T.V. that “Birdie” would save the day! (in my dream that is)

Then it switched to showing Robert Byrd on T.V. smiling and looking like a politician. Except he was doing the Nixon Victory signs.

Yet, I knew he had passed away (in real life) and knew he couldn’t possibly “save the day.”

And I feared that some people were going to go and try to make it look like he was still alive to get the legislation passed.
What a crazy dream.

Byrd loved animals. Here he is talking about some people who were having caged dog fights. Byrd didn't talk taht way in my dream. He was more like a Nixon, but looked like Byrd.

Mind-Reading Experiment.

Wither. [book review]

I’m reading Lauren DeStefano's “Wither.”

It is a dystopia set in the future. As you may already know, I’m a big fan of dystopian novels.
There is a cure! It is for everything: cancer, disease, illness. That generation is healthy and they live long lives.

However, their children suffer. Something has changed. People live shorter lives. Boys live about 25 years and girls live about 20. The world is divided. There are older people who are living a long life and then there are young kids (no older than 20-25).

The main character Rhine is only 16. She is kidnapped and locked up in a mansion. She is married off to a man along with two other girls. Plus he already has a first wife. Rhine is totally different from the other two girls. One is an orphan who loves the new lifestyle. The other is depressed and probably suicidal.

The man is in love with his first wife who is dying because she is reaching the age of 20. Rhine is probably expected to be his “new favorite” wife after the passing of the first.

All Rhine can think about is earning his trust. Once she does that she’ll be granted the freedom to go outside. And then she’ll run. She wants to run home to watch her younger brother. Rhine and her brother both had to quit school as children and start working because their parents had died. Rhine does not want to be locked up even if it is in a mansion. She is 16 and probably has 4 good years to live. She wants her freedom!

Melancholia [Movie].

I saw a preview for Melancholia; a movie that will be released this year.

Many people who follow my blog know that I'm a big fan of the dystopia novels and stories.

I'm excited about this movie. I do fear that there will be people who will say that this movie is "silly." Well, not silly. That is my choice word in place of a negative word.

A Review of "The Help."

I went to see the new movie The Help based on the book by Kathryn Stockett.

I try to see all the movies with Emma Stone.

Many people who follow my blog know that I’m an Idealist/ healer. Naturally, I’m drawn to movies like The Help. Movies like this encourage me to be a better
person.

Here is a quick summary of the movie:
It takes places in Jackson, Mississippi during the Civil Rights era/ movement. Four maids (who are African American) are being interviewed in secret by a young college graduate (played by Emma Stone) about their work. They tell the true stories which becomes published in a book by an anonymous writer.

Bethany Hamilton (Soul Surfer).

I watched Soul Surfer on DVD tonight. It is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton.

I’m very inspired by Bethany.

I had read her book when it was first released.

I had written a letter to her on myspace (which was popular at the time). One of her relatives replied who had operated her myspace page. They sent me an autographed copy for a door-prize for the West Virginia Therapeutic Recreation Association (WVTRA) conference.

I must admit that I had a difficult time giving up that book. I wanted to keep it for myself.

I can’t remember who had won that copy of her book.

Dystopain Novels!

I’m reading This world we live in by Susan Beth Pfeffer this week. It is a dystopian novel. The moon has been hit by an asteroid and has moved real close to Earth. The moon’s gravitational pull has caused major changes on Earth. There have been tidal waves, earthquakes, and volcanoes. The sky is mostly dark and grey. The dark and grey world reminds me a little bit of The Road.

This novel is in the style of a teen’s journal. The main character, Miranda, writes about the world she lives in. She lives in a house with her mother and her two brothers: Matt and Jon. Food is scarce.

I won’t tell anything else about this book. I just did a quick amazon search on this book and realized that it is part of a trilogy. I didn't know about the first two books in the series. It didn't say anything about the trilogy on the back of the book.

Book # 3 - The one I just read

Last week I read The game by Monica Hughes. This book reminded me of the Hunger Games at first, so I purchased it. Which reminds me, I saw a poster for the Hunger Games movie at the theater last weeekend. I was hoping to see a preview for it, but they didn't show one. However, this story is very different from the Hunger Games once I started reading it.

This book takes place in the year 2154. Most jobs have been replaced by robots in this dystopian society. Unemployed people are sent to live in one of the Designated Areas (DA). Unfortunately more and more people are being designated as “employed” as the robots replace more jobs. They’ve replaced basic custodial jobs and even teachers. The main character Lisse has a friend who is physician’s son and assistant who gets replaced with a robot and is sent to her DA. They have a “game” for the unemployed. I can’t tell you anything else about the game without running this book.

Next, I’m going to read Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari. It says, “The world has ended, what comes next” on the back cover. I picked this book up at Border's at a discount price. By the way: I'm really sad about Borders closing.

I also purchased “2081” on DVD. It is a short film based on Kurt Vonnegut’s novel. I regret to say that I didn’t enjoy the DVD. As always the book is way better. I’m going to give away this DVD in an upcoming contest at this blog. So come back to this blog often to look for the contest. Other novels and books will be included in this give-away too.

That is where I go to check out books and get new ones. I'm pretty sad about this.

Huntington, W.Va. now has one bookstore left: Empire Books.

The Ashland, KY mall and Charleston, WV Town Center Mall both have a Borders/ borders express or Waldenbooks. The article said that borders had about 10,000 employees. I hate it for them too.

I like to watch the girl in the video. She seems fun.

Do you know how they have that thing where you tell people what kind of a learner you are: watching, listening, doing, a mix of some. Well, I've never been a good listner. I did better in classes where the teacher had a slideshow. (well, back then it was a power-point -- what were those light things that projected images? I dont' even recall now.) But the point is: Sometimes, I'll hear songs on the radio, but I never pick up the real lyrics. I hope this isn't one of them. I'll have to google the real lyrics for this.

Kailin Gow’s newest book Desire is now in my list of favorite dystopian novels!

Here is my brief summary of the book:

It takes place in a future state where everyone’s life is planned out for them. Each person receives “Life Plan” at the age of 18. Many people receive one that they desire. The main character Kama desires to receive a plan that says she’ll marry her boyfriend (the son of the Governor) and become the future First Lady of the State.

The committee takes everything into consideration about a person before giving a Life Plan. The story takes the first twist when Kama receives a blank plan. It says she’ll graduate high school with honors and it doesn’t say anything else. Naturally, she feels upset.

Then the story takes a magical twist. She meets a guy who tells her some of the secrets of the state and some information about Kama’s ancestors.

The book indirectly touches on the question: Are we victims of fate in a pre-planned world or do we have freewill and self-determination to create our own lives.

I’m not going to tell anything else about the book. You’ll have to read it yourself to discover the magical secrets and what happens to Kama.

School Uses Flow Theory

Have you heard of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow Theory?

I read an interesting article on CNN about a school that doesn’t have grade levels.

Each kid is on her (or his) own level in school. They don’t progress to the next level until they earn a 75% or higher in a section.

The benefits sound a lot like Flow Theory.

A kid won’t be bored working on something that is too each for them.

Other kids won’t be frustrated working on something that is too difficult for them.

Sounds like FLOW, huh?

Plus the principal reported that they’ve had a decrease in discipline problems.

I’d imagine that is because the students are in the FLOW.

I've downloaded Amanda Hocking's novella, "Letters to Elise" on my kindle a while back. I got it for .99 cents! How great is that. The book is a quick read, too. It is only 100 pages.

Many authors are “poking the box” with these little 100-page e-books.
The novella as it title suggests has to do with letters and I've always had a strange fascination with letters. The title reminds me of a song by my favorite band, The Cure.

The girl who chased the moon.

“The Girl Who Chased The Moon” is the 20th book that I’ve read this year! (This is excluding text books).

I loved this book! The titled jumped out at me at Borders Bookstore last week and I just had to pick it up.

It is a fictional novel about a teen-girl, Emily who moves in with her grandfather (away in North Carolina) after her do-good mother passed away. This was the first time she had met her grandfather and she discovers that her mother wasn’t quite who she thought she was from the townspeople. And her grandfather is very tall. All the characters in this book have some type of quirk. I thought this made them fun and interesting.

Many people give Emily strange looks. She soon learns it is because of her mother, but what did her mother do? Emily always knew her to be a person who did good deeds. Maybe her mother was trying to compensate for something she did in her past.

One boy who Emily likes says they have a common history, but she questions it because he is a stranger. He explained that there was a link between his uncle and her mother. But what is it? I can’t tell you or I’d spoil the book.

There are also strange lights in this town that get Emily’s attention at night.
I assumed they were fireflies at first. Some people think they’re ghosts.

I enjoyed that this book had a feeling like it was “real,” but it also had an element of fantasy to it, too, which I found enjoyable.

It is a fairly quick read. I read it in three days at a leisurely pace.
I’ve decided that I’m going to read all of Sarah Addison Allen's books now!

Wow, Superman denounces his American citizenship in the 900th edition of the comic.
According to Fox News, many people are upset about this and some just think that Superman is bigger than the United States. The article reported that Superman is from another plant.

I love comics a lot. I know Superman is from another planet, but it makes me question some things like when did Superman gain U.S. Citizenship? He (Clark Kent) was found in Kansas and his “adoptive Earth” parents raised him as if he were born there (based on my understanding of the movies). Would this make Kent/ superman an illegal alien? Pardon the pun on “alien.” Did he have legal citizenship? I hope they don’t attempt to deport Superman because of denounced citizenship.

The Presidency
The only grandfather who I knew (Alex) wasn’t biological. My biological grandfathers had passed away when I was too young to remember and one before I was born. My biological grandmother re-married when I was young.

My biological grandmother (Carrie) a retired school teacher would question me on things like states and capitols and U.S. Presidents. My grandfather had once told me that he could never be president of the United States. As a child, I replied, “I know that because Ronald Regan is already the President.” I was probably 7 or 8. He explained to me that he was born in Canada.

Kent/ Superman is a fictional character, but Kent could never “run” for President of the United States of America. I’m guessing Kent would have had an “inauthentic” Kansas birth certificate. However, if Kent was deported, I don't think he or Superman would have argued against it.

Of course, Superman is bigger than “Power.” He has larger, more humanistic and idealistic intentions. If he was power hungry he could have easily taken over the country or the planet.

Comics are interesting. The Watchmen Comic book focuses on how absolute power corrupts people. People in the comic question: “Who Watches the Watchmen?” They want to know who gives these Watchmen “superheroes” authority to dress up and fight crime. The people want to know if their actions are legal. The comic even has Richard Nixon as an unprecedented 5th-term president in the 80s who has used all means to change laws and hold on to power.

Jaycee update

I have a lot of empathy for Jaycee Dugard. I feel upset when I think about her situation. Of course, I think of her as a "Victor" for her struggles and not a victim. I'm very pleased to know she is free! I hope Jaycee and her children have a happier life.

Water for Elephants movie.

I went home for the Easter holiday weekend (Beckley, W.Va.). I miss home from time to time. I've lived in Huntington (W.Va.) since going to Marshall University in 2001. I never really left there. I wonder how my life would be had I made different choices. What if I didn't go away and stayed at the local Beckley College? What would have happened if I moved back to Beckley and had taken a different type of job?

Why am I asking these questions? It has to do with a bigger question: Do you have free choice or is life pre-determined? I like to think I have control.

Today, I watched the movie, "Water for Elephants." I enjoyed it a lot. The main character in the story is a guy named Jacob who joins the circus at the age of 21. I won't tell anything else about this story so I won't give-away any of the good parts in case you decide to read the book or watch the movie.

Here is the big question I got from this movie: Do we make choices or are they already made for us. The movie had a question that said something along the lines of: "You don't choose the cirus, the circus chooses you."

My sister Carrie told me that she didn't like the movie. I asked why and she said because of the way they treated animals. I pointed out that several characters in the movie had "good traits" and they cared for animals and I reminded her that I doubt if Hollywood would allow any animal to be harmed when they filmed the movie, (or at least I hope so). Most movies have a disclaimer that makes that clear. So, I decided to do a little google search. The info. was positive. I'd assume that the animal right groups would have had many posts asking people to avoid the movie had there been any harm. The "WeAreMovieGeeks" site and many others said that no animals were harmed in the movie, but I must say they are hard to watch.

I think I'd like to read the book, if I had more time.

I am a big fan of Sandra McLeod Humphrey's (2007) book, "Hot Issues, Cool Choices: Facing Bullies, Peer Pressure, Popularity, and Put-downs."

I'm a Recreational Therapist for children ages 7 to 13. I teach social skills, character development, coping skills, and problem-solving skills.

The therapeutic use of stories is one technique that I use to help teach children these valuable life skills. I often use the stories and discussion questions from Humphrey's book. I'll have the children put on a play to role-model the stories from the book. I encourage the children to use the social skills and character values taught from previous sessions in their role-play.

I read at CNN today that ebooks beat paperbacks. I'm an avid reader. I love my amazon kindle. I find it easier to read a novel on the kindle. I am a graduate student in a mental health counseling program. I've downloaded most of my text books on the kindle. It saves money to do so. However, not all college text books are on the kindle. There are some books I'd rather have in print. I buy children's picture books because I work with children. I give them as donations to the children's library where I work at. I want to encourage them to be readers. I like to have my favorite books in print, too. I also read some graphic novels, which I get in paperback, like the Max Ride Series. What's wrong with the world today?

It is the year 2011. Haven't we, as a society, learned to treat others better?

I found a youtube video by a very pretty young girl. She is talented. She made a unique youtube video and she tells about her struggles with kids who bully her.

I feel upset because I don't want this young girl to be picked on and I want to do something to help. I plan to donate money from my upcoming children's book, "building character: part 2" to some program that helps to teach respect and consideration to children and teens.

Yesterday, Jodee Blanco, presetned a training in West Virginia on bullying. I regret to say that I wasn't aware that Jodee was presenting this. I did read her previous book, "Please Stop Laughing at Me: One Woman's Inspirational True Story" several years ago. Jodee explains how she was tormented by kids at her school in this book.

Jodee has recently released a new book: Please Stop Laughing at Us . . .: One Survivor's Extraordinary Quest to Prevent School Bullying.

The Hunger Games (The Movie) -- Mockingjay

Suzanne Collins has taken me on an amazing adventure in the dystopia future in her trilogy the hunger games. These books include:

Book 1: The Hunger Games

Book 2: Catching Fire

Book 3: Mockingjay

It is going to be a movie! I think the release date is March 2012. One year from now.

Here is a summary of the book:

The country of Panem is located in North America. It is what is left after world destruction. The country is made up of 13 districts and a capitol. The 13th district is said to be have been destroyed by the capitol for defiance. The other 12 districts must also pay for the defiance of the people.

The capitol has their annual hunger games. It is a television show. Two children from each of the 12 districts are selected to participate. In this show, the 24 total contestants fight to kill off the others. The last person living is the winner.

Katniss is the main character in the series. Her younger sister Prim was selected as the female from her district for the 74th hunger games. Katniss volunteers to take her place in the hunger games, which is allowed.

Peeta is selected as the male winner from the 12th district. Surprisingly, Peeta reveals that he is in love with Katniss. The bad news is that two people can’t win the hunger games and they’re both in it. I don’t want to say anything else about the books. The basics of what I’ve said above take place in the first book. I’m currently reading book # 3. There is going to be a movie about this book or at least those are the rumors I’ve read online. You can get the books: Here is a book trailer:
